Poll: How often do you see your horse?

For those of you that board your horse or used to board your horse.  I'm curious....take the survey below please!

  • Daily
  • 5-6 times a week
  • 3-4 times a week
  • 1-2 times a week

I often think about other things I do need to get done and find I feel guilty when I don't try to see my mare every day.  This feeling of guilt occurs especially since I've waited soooo long to have a horse!  What are you thoughts?

I have always had mine at home. When I had one of my folks horses at a barn I cleaned stalls for board, so I was there every day. So that doesnt help you either!
Dont feel guilty only going out 2-3 times a week, especially through the Winter!
You will do fine, she is happy as a clam as long as she gets her breakfast and dinner and time out with her buddies.

Oh I agree, I know's she's happy. Horses don't need to be ridden to be happy. They just need food, fresh water, field and friends really to be happy. I think it's more a human personification that we think horses are happiest being ridden and worked. Most do really enjoy work but I don't think a horse is really "missing" it.

I'm just thinking about things such as going to gym, running errands, doing things I need to at home etc. that get in the way of pony time since I have limited hours in my day. I try to see her most days but if I don't, I don't want to get down on myself. I know she's at a good facility that obviously keeps tabs on the condition of each horse. I also prefer having my eyes on her regularly at least to just make sure she's doing alright.

This so won't be an issue when I can move to a place with acerage!

I ride (well taking a hiatus till concussion is all better) about five days a week. Sometimes it is really difficult to keep the barn a priority. It is half an hour away from my house, so it also takes a lot of gas. I can't wait to have my own place!

We'll just have to see how it goes for me. It's not so much going out there but being able to do something during the week. Now when I arrive it's dark so the only option is the indoor. Last night there were 5 horses in there!! I just led Dani around working with her on getting used to it so I liked that it was busy but I'd have to get used to riding in a busy arena...I'm not a show person so that's a little crazy for me and will take getting used to but hopefully most days it won't be so crowded and I'll be able to ride her or I'll plan to go later in the evening instead of right after work.

When I used to board my horses I still saw them 5-6 days a week. The amount of gas I was using and the miles on my truck were piling up so much it was ridiculous. So almost ten years ago we just decided to buy some land and build a new house, barn and fencing. Now instead of two horses...we have five plus a mini-donk. LOL
Some days I sure would love to sleep in though.

I wouldn't feel bad! I love my girl and used to have her at a self-care barn, but I recently moved and moved her to full care because so many other things in my life were falling by the wayside. I found a full care place I love and so I am comfortable if I go 5 days or so without getting to the barn because I know she is still getting love and attention and outstanding care.

I totally get the personification thing as I do the same thing. I just think that I need to take care of myself, my non-equine babies, and my friends/family sometimes and the horse is going to have to wait. It is hard, but especially in winter it is something you have to do sometimes.

Yes exactly Lauren! I have my house that I have to take care of and sometimes have updating projects that need to get done, husband needs time too, two dogs, fish tanks to maintain and then I need to get myself to the gym more often as well!

That's one of the main reasons I was so bent on finding a place with good pasture and full care that was reasonable. I wanted my horse to have a good life. If we think about it even if we see our horses a couple hours each day the other 20 some hours a day is theirs and I'm glad that she gets hers in as natural an environment. Plus the caretakers are great as I've experienced from her recent leg injury! Thanks for all the comments and encouragement!
